Corner Landmark for over 160 years…

This sturdy brick house has stood sentry on the corner of West 26th Street and Chatham Avenue since 1867.  The first owner was Edward Berdge.  He and his sons owned a stone cutting business located adjacent to the house.  They produced headstones and architectural pieces.  The Berdge family would own the property until 1906 when the home was sold to Pierre Krust.  Mr. Krust, a shipbuilder by trade would soon construct a home for he and his wife on the rear yard of the house, while members of his extended family continued to live in the corner house.  As the Great Depression was ending, both of the Krust houses were sold.  Like so many properties in the neighborhood, the house changed hands many times, was used as an income property, eventually digressing into a rooming house.  The late 1970’s brought renewed interest into Ohio City and the house was significantly remodeled, reflecting that era with an open floor plan and exposed brick walls.  Tim Del Papa acquired the house in 1992. The first floor open floor plan remains, but complimented with contemporary upgrades.
