If the walls could talk in this storied house…..
The unique history of this house dates over 160 years, just after Ohio City was annexed to the city of Cleveland. The front portion of the house was originally a one and a half story 600 square foot home. The builder, Adam Karn was a brick mason and lived there with his wife and seven children. The house stayed in the Karn family until 1912 when it was sold to their tenants, John and Elizabeth Steinhauer.
Mrs. Steinhauer was a Spiritualist minister, holding séances and offering her services as a clairvoyant in the house. The Steinhauers soon added a second floor to the house which provided income from four sleeping rooms. By 1915, the seven room “Steinhauer Hotel” was added to the rear of the house, complete with The Light and Truth Spiritualist Temple in the large basement.
By 1927, the Steinhauers sold the property to Slovakian immigrant Joseph Gebura. He, his wife and seven children occupied the former hotel, rented the front portion as sleeping rooms and converted the temple into his sheet metal shop. By 2010, Gebura’s youngest daughter lived in the rear of the house, while her widowed sister in law occupied the front.
Tim Del Papa purchased the storied house in 2011. The rear portion of the home maintains all of the historic features, while the front portion has a contemporary renovation while preserving the chestnut floors and original doors.
